Make the Most Of Your Workout On Arden’s Trails

The miles of trails that wind throughout Arden are perfect for a stroll, bike ride or jog. Or, you can take it a step further and include full-body exercises along the way. Incorporating strength training to your regular exercise plan is ideal for overall muscular health, balance and coordination. Here are some ideas to get you started. Remember to stay hydrated!

Air Squats
Stand with your feet apart, just wider than your hips, with toes pointed out and your hands clasped for balance. Tilt your hips down and bend at the knees to squat down as far as possible, keeping your head and chest high. Press down through your legs to return to starting position.

Walking Lunges
You’ll basically be taking extra-large steps. Step forward with one foot, bending both knees at 90 degrees. Press through your back leg to step forward and drop into a lunge on the other side. Continue walking forward, ensuring your back knee is just above the ground with each step.

Arm Circles
This one sounds easy, but you’ll be surprised! Stand with your arms held straight out at shoulder height. Keep your arms extended as you begin making small circles with your hands, circling from your shoulders, not your wrists. Alternate which direction you make the circles in.

Plank and Mountain Climbers
To get into the plank position, start on all fours with your shoulders directly above your wrists. Step your feet back so your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your heels. To keep your back flat, think about pushing the ground away from your while pulling your belly toward the sky. Hold for 30-60 seconds, or as long as you can manage.

Up the challenge with some mountain climbers. Start in the plank position, then bring one knee in toward your chest, then step back to the plank position. Repeat with the other knee.
