5 Tips for Hiking With Kids

Recent studies show that kids who spend time outdoors perform better in school, have increased attention spans, are less anxious and happier overall. Gathering together to go on a family hike is a great way to bond and get some exercise in the fresh air. Here are a few easy ways to make sure it’s a happy hike for the whole family:

  1. Choose your path wisely.

One of the most important things you can do is to make sure to choose a hike that is appropriate for your kids’ age and skill level. Arden’s 20 miles of trails are located just steps away from home, making it easy to return home if needed. And with so many to choose from, you can find a new favorite trail every weekend!

  2. Create a sense of ownership.

Kids love feeling like they’re in charge. Giving them special responsibilities can help make them feel more involved. Let them carry a small backpack with snacks and water or let them lead the family along the trail. These small things can go a long way in getting them excited for next time.

  3. Have a special treat.

Bring some fuel for the journey! The day before your hike, help the kids make something special to bring along. Set up a build-your-own trail mix bar with pretzels, nuts, chocolate and dried fruit, and let the kids create a custom snack. Then you’ll all have something delicious to look forward to!

  4. Encourage curiosity.

Little things like binoculars, a bug net or magnifying glass can turn a normal family hike into a road full of discoveries! Or, you can plan something bigger like a scavenger hunt, geocaching or a game of local plants bingo. You’re only limited by your imagination!

  5. Pack your patience.

Kids don’t have the endurance that adults do, and they’re going to need to take frequent breaks to rest and rehydrate. Let the smallest traveler set the pace and use the opportunity to really explore your surroundings. You never know what kind of interesting plant or cool critter you might have walked past otherwise!
